Happy Robert Smalls Day!!!! 🎉🥳⚓️🛟🚢👨🏿‍✈️ Captain #RobertSmalls was a hero of the Civil War, who commandeered a Southern Steamship and escaped to freedom with his family and crewmen.

Ways to celebrate:

Grill - or have Low Country Boil!
Low Country Boil comes from the area in S Carolina where Smalls lived. So making a Low Country Boil at Home, or, where possible, ordering one from a Black Owned Restaurant, Is a fun way to celebrate!

Supporting Black Owned Businesses is always a good way to celebrate a Holiday recognizing the stolen labor of Black People - and Robert Smalls was an Entrepreneur!

Coming Soon from the Authors and Illustrator of "My Brother Santa: Great Granddaddy's Christmas Storytelling Magic" is the new Children's Book: "Captain Smalls: Great Granddaddy's Storytelling Magic"

While researching this book, which is about Captain Robert Smalls (https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_Smalls), we found out that last year South Carolina officially made *May 13* “Robert Smalls Day.” #robertsmallsday

We built robertsmallsday.com, and we'll be promoting the holiday there and on social media, and made the attached flyer to help promote the holiday.

We’re writing & illustrating the book so more people will know the story of Robert Smalls, and the holiday does that, too. Everyone needs to hear this story. Everyone deserves to hear this story. And when you hear this story, you want to celebrate. This history should be celebrated. And of course, we could use more holidays about the many heroic Black People that white supremacists attempted to erase.

Here are some ways to celebrate:
1. Reading about Robert Smalls and talking about him with family & friends.
2. Grilling / sharing a meal with those closest to you (one point that gets lost in previous tellings of Smalls’ story is that he didn’t commandeer the Planter and escape by himself, but did so with the help of his crew and family. So one way to celebrate is with the people you depend on the most.)
3. “Low Country Boil” comes from the area in South Carolina where Smalls lived. So making a Low Country Boil at home, or, where possible, ordering one from a Black Owned Restaurant, is a fun way to celebrate.
4. Supporting Black Owned Businesses is always a good way to celebrate a Holiday recognizing the stolen labor of Black People.

If you wanted an extra excuse to celebrate in May, here it is!
